Sony CEO: PS3 is 'Making a Comeback Already'
by James Brightman
The PS3 may be down, but it's certainly not out, according to Sony CEO Howard Stringer (right). The Sony chief said that the PS3 is already on the comeback trail and it's going to be vital to the company's growth. Meanwhile SCE President Kaz Hirai promised that 380 games are on the way by next March. [Update: Over 145 games in the U.S.]
While the game division at Sony lost nearly $2 billion in the last fiscal year and the PlayStation 3 has been trailing the competition, Sony CEO and Chairman Howard Stringer reemphasized the importance of the new console and the gaming business to his company's success.
While promising shareholders that Sony will "shift from recovery to profitable growth," he said that the PS3 is a "key driver" of future growth for the company, according to an AP report.
Stringer, who recently acknowledged that Sony is currently studying how to "refine" the price of the expensive PS3, noted that the situation for the PS3 has already improved. "All the production problems have been solved. We are making a comeback already," he said. "We always lose money in the hardware initially, and we recover that money gradually. We believe that the PS3 going forward will be vital to our future, and succeed."
Of course, the best way to boost the PS3's profile and to better its chances for success is to provide consumers with an abundance of great software. Sony Computer Entertainment America previously said that a "flood" of new games (more than 100 titles) is coming to the PS3 this year. Currently there are 60 retail titles and 50 downloadable titles available for the PS3 worldwide.
Now, however, according to Reuters, which cited the Nikkei newspaper, SCE President Kaz Hirai said that gamers can expect 380 games in total for the PS3 by the end of the current fiscal year in March 2008. This was broken down into 200 retail games and 180 downloable titles on the PlayStation Network Store.
According to the report, Hirai added that Sony would work with game software publishers on marketing, including events and in-store promotions, to help ensure an increase in the release of games.
[UPDATE] Kaz Hirai's figure cited above is an international figure. SCEA's Dave Karraker said there are around 145 or more titles specifically for the U.S. market. "Here in the US, I count more than 105 Blu-ray disc games and about 40 PlayStation Network games and game packs for this fiscal," he told GameDaily BIZ. "Note that I don't have visibility on third party games past Christmas and our fiscal runs to the end of March, so there are probably more."

PlayStation Has its Eye on You This Summer
Building on its EyeToy technology, Sony Computer Entertainment has unveiled its new PlayStation Eye (pictured), which will provide improved motion tracking, voice chat without the need for a headset, motion capture functionality and more. Get all the details...
Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) has today taken the wraps off of its next-generation EyeToy peripheral, or as they're calling it more simply, the PlayStation Eye. The new USB camera for the PlayStation 3 will launch this summer and will feature "huge advances" in camera and microphone technology.
Unlike the EyeToy, the PlayStation Eye comes equipped with an all-new four microphone array, "incorporating multidirectional voice location tracking, enhanced echo cancelling and background noise suppression [which] allows for clear audio chat in even the most noisy of environments, without the need to hold or wear a headset." Sony said the device has more accurate speech recognition as well.
The camera itself features an improved frame rate of up to 120 frames per second, providing users with "super-smooth" video, according to Sony. The company has also designed it so that it works well in low-light conditions. Of course, like the EyeToy, one of the main uses for the PlayStation Eye will be motion tracking in games. Sony said that the motion tracking has been improved and that the zoom lens has two positions – one for close-up and one for full-body motions, "for a fully physical gaming experience."
The peripheral will come packed with new software called EyeCreate. This editing software will enable users to save, edit and add effects to their photos, videos and audio clips. Users will have the ability to capture audio and video (with a range of different capturing modes, including slow motion and time-lapse) and save it directly to the PS3's hard drive.
"With the release of PlayStation Eye we will be able to dramatically enhance the consumer's PS3 experience," said original EyeToy creator Richard Marks, research and development at Sony Computer Entertainment America. "Beyond audio/video chat and the ability to save videos to your PS3 hard drive, PlayStation Eye opens up a whole new world of entertainment options and adds a new dimensions to games across multiple genres."
An exact price for the PlayStation Eye has not been announced yet. Here are some more exact technical specifications for our more geeky readers:
